The Half of It

By Sophia and Ava Fineza

The Half of It was something we were excited for(we being mostly Ava, Sophia not so much). Though it was a bit of a cliche concept, the movie had an interesting spin that had the potential to be a pretty good rom-com - charming small town, cute guys(and girls 👀), lovable protagonist, aesthetic indie music - but unfortunately, this movie missed the mark. The(first & second) Half(halves) of It is(are) a drag, devoid of the warmth you can feel in other cheesy high-school movies. It also felt awkward - like relationships progressed but we weren’t made aware, and it was disappointing to see so many montages. Montages that feel like they have to prove something when they could have just shown actual interactions between characters. Given that there were three relationships for the movie to split its time between, it did the best it could, and it was nice to see the friendship between Ellie and Paul develop. But something about this film was… lacking, and overall it made us think that we really only saw a half of it :(.

logline: When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend - or fall for his crush.

My favorite characters:

  • Daniel Diemer as Paul Munsky - stupid, but a king anyways. he was really sweet throughout the whole movie, and had some really great character development. i also would very much like to try one of his infamous sausage tacos.

This movie is rated PG-13. Here’s why:

  • Brief Language

  • Underage Drinking

Something I liked: ahhh there’s this one scene where two characters (i won’t say who for spoilers’ sake) and Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten is playing over it, which is an absolute BANGER. The entire mini montage and scene immediately after was also super visually pleasing, and probably my favorite part of the movie.
