Brave

Brave is the quintessential mother/daughter movie. Finally, a Disney movie where the mom isn’t killed off in the first 10 minutes of the film! While Finding Nemo centers on a parent letting go and focuses on the father-son relationship, Brave centers around a daughter wanting freedom and to break female traditions. The movie focuses on the hardships of the complex mother-daughter relationship. Though Merida faces more… ancient traditions, we all can relate to the struggle of choosing to live by our own desires and our parents - in some shape or form. As always, Pixar’s animation is incredible. Merida’s hair (I know, weird thing to center on) was wonderfully detailed and looked so real. Kudos to the filmmakers, who drew from real folk legends to create the mystical elements of the movie, such as the Will o’ Wisps. Brave is a heartfelt and inspiring movie, perfect to watch with your mom or anytime you want those warm fuzzy feelings.

logline: Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, this movie features Princess Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of Queen Elinor. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right.

My favorite characters:

  • Kelly Macdonald as Merida - she said: i’m a bad b*tch. sorry for the non-disney friendly language, but for real, Merida is so cool. her skills with the bow and arrow? unmatched. i also loved her character arc through the film.

This movie is rated PG. Here’s why:

  • Scary Action

  • Rude Humor

Something I liked: The scene toward the beginning of the movie where Merida rides through the woods shooting arrows into all the different targets. It’s super pretty and Touch the Sky by Julie Fowlis is playing over it, which is one of my favorite Disney songs of all time. Basically, that entire scene is just *chef’s kiss*.

Where to Watch:

  • Disney+

  • YouTube, Google Play Store, Apple, Amazon Prime, and Vudu for rent or purchase
