A Few Thoughts With Ava - #RegisterAFriendDay

By Ava Fineza

When I think of voting and registering to vote, this comic often comes to mind:

It’s pretty hilarious, as most Calvin and Hobbes strips are, but it’s very clearly a nihilistic point of view, and you can see the clear irony as Calvin, Hobbes and their wagon careen off the edge of the trail, a direct consequence for him not steering. At least that’s how I interpret it. What Calvin said is very true - if we don’t take action to change what is happening around us, nothing will change and we can point to this lack of change to justify why we don’t take action. But wouldn’t you want to take action, so that things can change and prove to you why you should take action, and in this case, vote? A lot of people in our generation want change and reform, to fix the extreme issues and systemic oppression that was built years and years ago, but in order to see change you must take your fate in your own hands.

I am a Voter, a nonpartisan movement, works to help you create a voter identity. Making the statement, “I am a voter” instead of “I will vote” helps push people to make a habit of registering themselves to vote. IAAV wants to make voting a mainstream idea and a part of your personal identity, something that is extremely important if you want to make any kind of impact on your society and government. logine is proud to be working with I am a Voter to improve voting in the US.

Unfortunately, there are some who don’t vote because they’ve lost hope in their government. It’s bleak, but not unjustified, and a quick look around you can show you all of the mess our past has created for us. But if anyone can fix this, it’s this generation, gen Z. I have seen so many inspirational, passionate people take action in their teens and I know it’s possible to get more, to create a culture of voting, to make it something everyone should do. Final thoughts: to spark change and reform you need to take action, and when it’s possible, you need to vote.
