wow so apparently this was an iconic childhood movie to many people my age?? i’m finally watching now at the age of 17, and was NOT disappointed. yeah, it was super cheesy but overall a pretty good movie! anne hathaway was amazing (as always) and i loved her as ella. although the writing of the movie did stray pretty far from the source material, the characters were still pretty to the original, which was really the only thing that needed to be like the book. i actually kind of liked that the movie wasn’t super similar to the original story. the addition of the civil rights movement was really cool. i think that it was a really smart way to introduce civil injustice to a younger audience, but not in a way that was too obvious. movies and shows that employ these kinds of strategies are probably a big contributing factor as to why our generation is so socially conscious. we learned it as kids, and we’re getting a chance to employ our ideas as young adults :) anyway, enough of my tangent! back to the review! i’m not sure how, but the early 2000s vibe of the movie only made it better. all of the very brightly colored outfits were. absolutely. fire. especially with the return of 2000s fashion, i did indeed want to steal a LOT of the clothes out of the screen, especially ella’s wedding/dancing dress hehe. idk why but the cottagecore/y2k motif of the whole wardrobe department was just really doing it for me. this whole movie is so much fun and i HIGHLY recommend you give it a watch, especially if you’re a fan of the book :)

my favorite character:

  • Anne Hathaway as Ella (of Frell) - i really really like ella, although she does fall into the trap that is hugh dancy. at first, she was this tough girl who was annoyed with people like her stepsisters, and cared about things like ogre rights lol. you could definitely say that i liked her more at the beginning of the movie than the ending. when she started dating char, she got a turned into a little bit of a disney princess, which i didn’t love. even though love made her a lil dumb, she still was sassy and an icon overall.

this movie is rated PG. here’s why:

  • crude humor

something i liked: even though they’re cheesy as hell, i love the musical numbers in this movie!! somebody to love and don’t go breakin’ my heart? bruhhhh i swear to freaking god. we love a fun dance number featuring EXTREME early 2000s outfits. also, anne hathaway’s voice is actually not bad! obviously it has nothing on the original songs, but i respect these covers.
